+++  Kyrill Khlebnikov was desolated by what seemd the failure of his constant endeavor.  Also, he sadly missed his best friend and long-time associate, Ivan Kuskov, who had left Fort Ross for St. Petersburg upon receipt of a pension.  The years passed, and no word ever came from Kuskov.  Other friends vanished as completely  to the other side of the world, and Khlebnikov commenced to long with painful nostalgia for the scenes of his youth, and reunion with old friends and family.  To William Hartnell he wrote from Sitka on October 28, 1832:  ++  ’Finally I too am leaving the Northwest Coast of America, but so as not to jump too suddenly from America to Europe I am consoling myself by remaining on ‘America’ (the name of our ship).  By the end of November we hope to be in San Francisco Bay and how I long to see you again for a last time and personally to thank you for your friendship.  I have the pleasure of writing you from the ship ‘Europe’ which leaves from here carrying your friend Mr. Etolin and the worthy Dr. Mayer.  The latter I recommend to your benevolence as one of the best men I know.  HIs other qualities you will discover during the first conversation.  I ask you the favor of introducing him to worthy people and help him in his profession of Biology. ++  Will you kindly assure Madame Hartnell . . . . of my respect and deliver to her the two jars of preserves.  In case we do not meet again in Monterey, I ask you earnestly to write me in Petersburg – especially about California events which interest me extremely because of my long acquaintance there.  I promise, in turn, to inform you of European news.  At the same time, I beg you to write me in English or Spanish [this letter of Khlebnikov's to Hartnell is German script], as I read both languages though I do not know how to write them.  ++  All letters are to be addressed to the Governor of the Colony Baron Wrangell.  ++  Not until the summer of 1833 did the Russians forget their injured feelings and make another try for trade and hunting privileges in California.  This time the Baron himself descended from the north, in full regalia.  His visit was well timed to coincide with the coming into power of California’s most capable governor, Don Jose Figueroa.  To William Hartnell, von Wrangell announced his arrival on July 14, writing in perfect German script: . . . +++
