Former Victoria MLA and longtime local businessman Newell Morrison has died at the age of 89.

The former Social Credit MLA was elected for one term in 1972 in the riding of Victoria.

Born in Chungking Hills, China in 1924, Morrison went on to serve as a pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force in the Second World War.

In addition to political life, he was a prominent member of Victoria’s business community, including the founder of one of the city’s oldest travel agencies, Travelworld, in 1971. It was later sold to North American Leisure Group.

Morrison also ran local car dealerships, served as a trustee on the Terry Fox Medical Research Foundation, was a former president of the B.C. Development Corp. and past chairman of Pacific Isotopes and Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

He owned a local airline that was eventually sold to B.C. businessman Jimmy Pattison, who later sold to Air Canada.

He’s survived by his wife Marjorie, four children and seven grandchildren.

A service is scheduled for Aug. 19, 2 p.m., at McCall’s funeral home, 1400 Vancouver St. in Victoria.

Morrison died on July 31.
